Bennie Moten led one of the finest of the territory bands of the s. Trumpeter Ed Lewis, trombonist Thurmon Hayes, the young baritonist Jack Washington and pianist Moten himself were excellent soloists (even if Woody Walder's spots on clarinet and tenor were erratic), the head arrangements were generally quite colorful, and the band had a spirit of its own.

Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orchestra was the most sucessful Jazz band of the Midwest. The band toured all over the country and had a top selling recording in for Victor named " South ". In Count Basie of The Blue Devils joined the band, and several other members of that band soon joined Moten's Orchestra.
